BELAJAR ENGLISH - SYNTAX: SENTENCE BUILDING

PREAMBLE
Tomorrow's Beauty Begins TonightWhen we talk or write, we use words.  Wityh words we try to make people understand everything that we wish to say.  We try to make our meaning very clear to them.  When a group of words, that is, some words put together, makes our meaning clear, we call that group of words a sentence.  So we may say that a sentence is a group of words which makes complete sense.  The word complete means full and the word sense means meaning.  We speak and write in sentences.

Sometimes a sentence may have only one word in it; but its meaning is clear to us.
EXAMPLES:
  • Stand
  • Go
  • Run
  • Stop
A sentence with only one word in it is usually an order or a command, but because its meaning is clear to us, we call it a sentence.
As a rule, however, a sentence has more than one word in it.  This is because we usually use words in sets or groups and not just one word at a time.

EXAMPLES:
  • How are you?
  • Azmi is a clever boy
  • Pick up that piece of paper
  • We are the champions!
